The ninth grade program at Overlea High School is based on a teamed instructional model emphasizing academics, character strengths, and the extension student views beyond high school.  This “A.C.E.” model provides support for students as they strengthen and expand their skills for success in the 10, 11, and 12 grades.  Each team of teachers works collaboratively to implement common instructional strategies in English, Mathematics, Science, and American Government.

Academic skills are further enhanced by the celebration and development of students’ character strengths.  Ninth graders focus on kindness, citizenship, social intelligence, and persistence as they mature through their freshman year.  These strengths are practiced and celebrated in class through weekly “shout-outs” and quarterly self-assessments.

Developing a post-graduation image of oneself is important for setting goals and achieving academic success in high school.  In the ninth grade program, students are given the opportunity to tour college campuses, interact with the local business community, and track their movement toward post-high school goals using the Naviance software program.
